Trump Demands Investigation After Escalator, Teleprompter Malfunctions at UNšŸ”„šŸ”„

Former U.S. PresidentĀ Donald TrumpĀ has demanded an official investigation into what he called a ā€œtriple sabotageā€ during his appearance at theĀ United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)Ā this week.

Trump claimed that three separate technical failures disrupted his visit: anĀ escalatorĀ suddenly stopped while he and former First Lady Melania Trump were riding it, hisĀ teleprompterĀ malfunctioned during his address, and there were allegedĀ audio issuesĀ inside the assembly hall.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:

ā€œA REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday — not one, not two, but three very sinister events! This was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.ā€

He said the incidents were ā€œtoo coincidental to be accidentsā€ and announced that theĀ U.S. Secret ServiceĀ had opened a review. Trump also said he had sent a letter toĀ UN Secretary-General António GuterresĀ requesting that all security footage be preserved, particularly around the escalator’s emergency-stop button.

United Nations Responds

A spokesperson for the UN, Stéphane Dujarric, dismissed the notion of sabotage and offered alternative explanations for each issue.

According to UN officials:

  • A U.S. delegation videographerĀ walking backwardĀ on the escalator likely triggered itsĀ automatic safety stop.
  • TheĀ teleprompterĀ used during Trump’s speech wasĀ operated by his own staff, not the UN’s technical team.
  • TheĀ sound systemĀ in the hall continued functioning for delegates through their interpreter earpieces, despite minor transmission issues.

Dujarric said the UN takes all technical failures seriously but emphasized that ā€œthere is no evidence whatsoever of intentional interference.ā€

Analysis

The incident, quickly dubbedĀ ā€œEscalatorgateā€Ā by social media users, occurred during one of the most-watched sessions of the UNGA. Trump’s supporters have echoed his call for an inquiry, while critics argue the malfunctions appear to have been routine technical glitches exaggerated for political effect.

For now, both theĀ UNĀ and theĀ Secret ServiceĀ have not confirmed any ongoing investigation, and no evidence has surfaced to suggest the events were coordinated acts of sabotage.
